Pattachitra translates to painting (chitra) on a leaf (patta). In olden days, intricate paintings were done on leaves, especially leaves from the peepul tree. Today, artist Hussain, continues this style of intricate painting, but on silk instead of leaves.
Hussain is the same artist who makes the Straw Helix Spinners
that we carry. He does this work in his village in Orisssa. He paints with a very thin brush, which is what gives it the intricate level of detail, and a particular luminosity!
We have 3 pieces. Each is truly one-of-a-kind. Being worked in the village, one piece (the Blue Tree) has a small stain on it (by base), and the mounting to card paper is very rudimentary. I have included an image of the stain as well as of the back to show how each is affixed.
100% of the sales revenue from these paintings goes to Hussain. Your purchase provides Hussain with a living wage and so directly helps keep this fragile and ancient craft alive. Thank you!
Hand-painted in Orissa, India.
