The Story Depicted on the Large Tapestry:
The appliqué is hand-worked by women in a collective in Barmer, in the desert near the India-Pakistan border. In this region, a pot of water lasts a family for three days. The motif depicts a woman carrying a pot of water on her head, to water the tree. Her hand is raised to stay 'stop' to the man, who has cut a stick from the tree. 'Don't cut the tree,' she says, 'the tree gives us shade for people and animals to rest under. Trees are so important to us, that even I am coming to water the tree with my precious water.'
