The Fulani people of Mali traditionally wore their riches in adornments they could carry at all times.
Their iconic gold earrings, inspired by the elegant curve of seedpods, ranged from modest hoops to elaborate forms so heavy that yarn was wrapped around the hooks to lighten the weight.
A rectangular ingot of metal is hammered into a cross shape, pounded until it is paper thin, then twisted to mimic the shape of seedpods.
This modern adaptation on the traditional design features hammered brass or sterling silver which makes the earring far more lightweight and affordable without sacrificing the traditional aesthetic.
