Inspired by the floral language of Indian chintz, these Tree of Life curtains feature flowering branches, leaves, and birds drawn from historic textile patterns.
The word chintz comes from India and refers to the painted and printed cottons made along the Coromandel Coast. During the colonial period, these textiles travelled to Europe and became an important influence on European design.
The patterns behind these curtains were discovered in old French books and book remnants.
Screen printing is a traditional method in which ink is pushed through a fine mesh screen onto the fabric, leaving the design behind. Each color requires its own screen, and the fabric is carefully aligned as the pattern is printed by hand.
The Black Tree of Life curtain, for example, … it takes 36 screens to print one panel! This requires a high degree of accuracy and experienced craftsmanship.Â
