What is a dohar?
The word dohar comes from the Hindi do, meaning two, referring to its double layer of cotton. So a dohar is a traditional Indian coverlet made from two layers of cotton with no fill. Lightweight and breathable, it gets softer with every wash.
What is a Kantha dohar?
Kantha is one of the oldest textile traditions in India, with origins traced back to before 1500 BC. The word comes from the Sanskrit kontha, meaning thorn, a reference to the needle used to make the running stitch.
That stitch is the heart of Kantha. Tiny and even, it looks like little grains of rice running across the surface of the fabric. It was the stitch of commoners, never commissioned by kings or ordered by landed gentry. Old cotton saris were layered together and held with a simple running stitch, creating a light quilt that kept people warm on cool nights.
Today that same simple stitch covers the entire surface of this dohar, giving it a signature lightly quilted texture and relaxed drape. The handiwork is truly incredible. Nothing wasted. Everything made by hand.
