Longpi Pottery - The Heritage Craft of Manipur

Longpi refers to two villages, Longpi Kajui and Longpi Khullen, in the Ukhrul District of Manipur, India. These villages are renowned for their centuries-old pottery tradition, locally known as Longpi Ham. Before the arrival of aluminum cookware, Longpi Ham was the primary cooking utensil material among the Tangkhul Naga people.

This distinctive pottery is crafted from a natural blend of black serpentinite stoneand a special brown clay said to be found only in the Longpi area. The mixture is hand-shaped, polished, and sun-dried before being fired in a bonfire. While still hot, each piece is burnished with the leaf of the Chiron ni tree, giving the pottery its signature deep black color and smooth finish.

Today, pottery remains a vital secondary occupation for the Longpi artisans and continues to be a primary source of income for many households, carrying forward a tradition that connects the community to its cultural roots.

Care Instructions: Although these pieces are technically dishwasher safe for regular use, I recommend avoiding frequent washing to increase longevity of the cane detail. I prefer to hand wash these and wipe any excess water after washing. Food-safe.

Handmade in Manipur, India.
